Think fast! What do you want to know about hair drug testing?
1. It goes back 90 days. The standard detection period for hair drug testing is set by the lab. This goes for businesses sending in employees to be tested, and consumers sending in samples from their home hair drug test kits. Both labs used by Home Health Testing go back 90 days.

2. Yes, it works. Studies have shown that compared to urine drug testing, hair drug testing finds between 4 to 8 times the amount of users, in part because the detection period is so much longer.
3. It won’t make you bald.. While 100-120 strands of hair are required, that really only amounts to the diameter of a pencil.
4. But you can’t just supply one hair. A hair drug testing lab needs a sufficient sample in order to wash, liquidate, and analyze the hair effectively.
5. You can’t cheat them. Shampoos aren’t going to help you – the inside of the hair is analyzed, not the outside. This means external contamination is near impossible too.

To my knowledge a synthetic cannabinoid hair drug test has not yet been developed. Synthetic cannabinoids do not show up as marijuana on our tests, and we do not yet sell a home spice drug test (I think the closest one to being ready is a rapid result spice screen, but even that is not ready yet). NMS labs is a leading national testing company and currently only offer urine and blood testing for Spice.

Hi Jake,
At the moment benzodiazepines are not often tested for in hair. None of the hair tests we sell test for their use. They can be tested for in hair though – see NMS labs for example. I don’t know if your dosage would show up on a hair test or not. Benzodiazepines don’t stay in your urine very long, and the Xanax you took will be out of your urine by the time of the test.

Our hair products will not show a positive for suboxone or adderall. Hair drug testing is pretty straightforward – there is not a lot of overlap or false positives. As of writing major labs such as Psychemedics and NMS Labs also do not test for Adderall or Suboxone in hair. So I wouldn’t worry about it.

If someone smoked 1/31/2011 with only a few puffs and then took a hair follicle test on 2/10/2011 is there a good possibility it would show within the hair? They cut the hair strands and there is a good bit of lengthy fuzz left in those spots. Please respond ASAP.

If someone took a few hits of marijuana for the first time in years on the night of 1/31/2011 and was then given a hair follicle test on the afternoon of 2/10/2011 is it possible that it would not have shown up? The hair was cut close to the scalp but not so close that there wasn’t a cm – 2 cm of hair left. Please respond ASAP.

No problem. Adderall does not show up as an amphetamine, and suboxone will not show up as an opiate. Hair tests are very specific about what compounds they look for. They don’t have as much overlap as urine screens.

It takes about a week after use for hair that would have drug traces in the shaft to grow out. So if someone is not really cutting close enough they will miss the hair with the traces of use. THC also does not bind quite as consistently to the hair shaft as other drug compounds; very light/incidental use might not be detected. But then again, it might be. Unfortunately it’s difficult to be more precise than that; I hope this was helpful though.

Hair tests go back 3 months if your hair is an inch and a half long. Each inch in length is roughly equivalent to a month. You’ll have to be more specific about drug use for me to address the question beyond that.

Thanks for your response. Hair drug tests go back 90 days when hair is used from the head (90 days = inch and a half long hair). They go back more vaguely but up to 6 mos/1 year with body hair. I can’t guarantee you’d get a negative result. The test is designed for a more chronic, regular user, and that is the type of person that most often shows up, but it is possible the use you described would show up. It’s hard to say.

I have thin short hair on my head so i doubt they will be able to take a sample from my scalp. I have been having regular hot and sweaty sex with a meth user. it just occured to me that his sweat pressing up against my body is going to get into my system. we know that sweat is one of the main ways we excrete our toxins. im seriously concerned about a hair test i have been asked to do. Because of the regular intake of his sweat, how concerned do i need to be to fail the hair test? (im sure this is a first, but seriously)
The requested hair test isnt for a job or a parole officer, its for child protection services and im scared to lose my kids. there would be no way to prove that the result was from a ton of sweaty sex!

It looks like I will need to take a hair follicle test for employment. I take prescription ritalin and lamictal (lamotrogene) daily.
I’m sure the ritalin will show up as an amphetamine but I’m not sure about the lamictal. I would prefer not to disclose the fact that I take lamictal but if it is going to show up == not disclosing it would be worse.
