0.08% Breathscan Breath Alcohol Test

The disposable FDA approved BreathScan® Alcohol Detector is a qualitative test available in 2 different blood alcohol levels: .02% (known as zero tolerance) to answer the question "Have you had anything to drink at all in the last 4 to 6 hours - yes or no?"; and .08% (the federal DUI level mandated nation-wide) to determine if someone who has been drinking is legally safe to drive.

The .08% version is intended for use by adults to make sure that they are legally safe to drive. All 50 states have laws defining it as a crime to drive with a blood alcohol concentration at or above .08 percent with most convictions for alcohol impaired driving resulting in license suspension or revocation. At .08, a person is 11 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than someone who has had nothing to drink.

Your driving abilities can be impaired with a blood alcohol level lower than .08% as well and the safest decision is to not drive if you have been drinking.

BreathScan® is a very easy test to use - just blow through the tube for 12 seconds. If the yellow crystals turn a light aqua (green/blue or blue/green) within 2 minutes, alcohol has been detected.

The BreathScan® alcohol test has earned many accolades, and is used by the Coast Guard and US Army. The test has been found 98% accurate by police departments using it for screening, and the Colorado Department of Health found it to be a suitable screening device prior to further testing (like a confirmatory body fluids alcohol test).

NOT A SELF TEST. HAVE SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT BEEN DRINKING HELP YOU TEST AND READ THE RESULTS. WAIT 15 MINUTES AFTER LAST ALCOHOLIC DRINK OR RINSE MOUTH WITH A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE TAKING THE TEST.

1. Squeeze middle of the detector between thumb and forefinger to break glass tube inside. Squeeze only once - do not crush or bend tube.

2. Immediately begin test once inner glass tube is broken. Subject should hold the Detector vertically so arrows on BLOW end are pointing down.

3. Have subject blow/exhale very hard into the tube in one continuous breathe for 12 seconds.

4. Shake Detector from side-to-side to distribute crystals evenly in Detector window.

5. Lay the Detector on a flat surface and wait 2 minutes.

Read results under incandescent or fluorescent light, or indirect sunlight.

If most of the crystals are a light aqua (green/blue or blue/green), the result is positive and the breath alcohol level is at or above the level printed on the Detector.

If most of the crystals are a light yellow, the result is negative and the breath alcohol is below the level printed on the Detector. The yellow does not have to match the unused Detector's yellow and may be much lighter or paler yellow than an unused Detector.

Compare the results to an unused Detector or to the yellow box printed on the Detector instructions.
