Oxycodone and hydrocodone are the primary ingredients in many of the most commonly abused prescription drugs, including OxyContin, Roxicodone, Roxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox. Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid. It is a primary active ingredient in prescription drugs that are frequently prescribed as painkillers. Oxycodone can be very helpful in relieving chronic pain, but when abused, oxycodone can provide an almost heroin-like high. OxyContin, a prescription formulation of oxycodone, is one of the most frequently abused oxycodone-based painkillers. It can come in a number of dosages and the pills come in a number of different colors. Oxycodone and OxyContin are frequently used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Oxycodone is the name of the chemical compound, and is contained in a number of medicines, often in combination with other painkillers, like acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). OxyContin is just the name of one medicine that is 100% made up of oxycodone. OxyContin is produced by Purdue Pharma, and has an extended release formulation. So, when taken properly, OxyContin’s effects will be spread over several hours. When abused, OxyContin will provide its effects in one massive wallop, leading to a heroin-like high as described above. These highs are achieved by crushing what is supposed to be an oral medication and injecting, snorting, or smoking the drug. This eliminates the time-release properties of OxyContin that make it an effective and widely used painkiller, and the drug abuser receives the entire dose of the drug all at once. Among the other prescription drugs that contain oxycodone are Roxicodone (sometimes mispelled as Roxycodone), Percocet, Percodan, Endocet, Tylox. Some of these drugs are purely oxycodone, others contain additional painkillers. Percodan, for example, contains oxycodone and aspirin. Tylox and Percocet contain oxycodone and acetaminophen. Like OxyContin, Roxicodone is made up of oxycodone alone. Hydrocodone is also a semi-synthetic opioid. It is the active ingredient in a number of other painkillers, such as Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, Norco, Zydone and Anexsia. Hydrocodone and oxycodone have a lot in common, and this drug test has been made to specifically target hydrocodone-based painkillers as well as oxycodone-based painkillers at a 98% accuracy level. In 2010, Hydrocodone (combined with acetaminophen) was the number one prescribed drug in the USA with 131.2 million prescriptions written. Hydromorphone is less common, but is similar to hydrocodone and oxycodone. The prescription/trade name medications that fall into this category and could be found by this OxyContin Test are Palladone, Palladone SR, and Dilaudid.
