This oxycodone drug test is a urine drug test that specifically targets oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone. Oxycodone and hydrocodone are the primary ingredients in many of the most commonly abused prescription drugs, including OxyContin, Roxicodone, Roxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox.

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid. It is a primary active ingredient in prescription drugs that are frequently prescribed as painkillers. Oxycodone can be very helpful in relieving chronic pain, but when abused, oxycodone can provide an almost heroin-like high. OxyContin, a prescription formulation of oxycodone, is one of the most frequently abused oxycodone-based painkillers. It can come in a number of dosages and the pills come in a number of different colors.

Oxycodone and OxyContin are frequently used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Oxycodone is the name of the chemical compound, and is contained in a number of medicines, often in combination with other painkillers, like acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). OxyContin is just the name of one medicine that is 100% made up of oxycodone. OxyContin is produced by Purdue Pharma, and has an extended release formulation. So, when taken properly, OxyContin’s effects will be spread over several hours. When abused, OxyContin will provide its effects in one massive wallop, leading to a heroin-like high as described above. These highs are achieved by crushing what is supposed to be an oral medication and injecting, snorting, or smoking the drug. This eliminates the time-release properties of OxyContin that make it an effective and widely used painkiller, and the drug abuser receives the entire dose of the drug all at once.

Among the other prescription drugs that contain oxycodone are Roxicodone (sometimes mispelled as Roxycodone), Percocet, Percodan, Endocet, Tylox. Some of these drugs are purely oxycodone, others contain additional painkillers. Percodan, for example, contains oxycodone and aspirin. Tylox and Percocet contain oxycodone and acetaminophen. Like OxyContin, Roxicodone is made up of oxycodone alone.

Hydrocodone is also a semi-synthetic opioid. It is the active ingredient in a number of other painkillers, such as Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, Norco, Zydone and Anexsia. Hydrocodone and oxycodone have a lot in common, and this drug test has been made to specifically target hydrocodone-based painkillers as well as oxycodone-based painkillers at a 98% accuracy level. In 2010, Hydrocodone (combined with acetaminophen) was the number one prescribed drug in the USA with 131.2 million prescriptions written.

Hydromorphone is less common, but is similar to hydrocodone and oxycodone. The prescription/trade name medications that fall into this category and could be found by this OxyContin Test are Palladone, Palladone SR, and Dilaudid.

Our oxycodone test is extremely accurate and requires only a urine sample and 5 minutes.  The test yields a positive result when the level of oxycodone in the urine sample is greater than 100 nanongrams/mL. If you are looking to test for prescription opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone, this is the test you want - the Opiates drug test only registers prescription opioids when they are at extremely high levels and is thus not as accurate as the OxyContin / Vicodin test in detecting them.

There are many excellent resources on oxycodone and synthetic opioid painkiller abuse. We recommend checking out the Office of National Drug Control Policy webpage on OxyContin, Vicodin, and Other Prescription drugs or visit the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration)'s website for more information.

We have also discussed oxycodone and hydrocodone extensively on our blog. Check out our articles "Your Complete Guide to Pill Mills and "Vicodin - The (Almost) Illegal Drug" for more.

*The Oxycodone urine drug test uses Oxycodone as the calibrator for the stated 100 ng/mL testing level. The following table lists the concentrations of compounds (ng/mL) that are detected as positive in this urine drug test

Oxycodone 100 ng/mL
Hydrocodone 6,250 ng/mL
Hydromorphone 50,000 ng/mL

Frequently Asked Questions - OxyContin Drug Test / Vicodin Test

Q: What are the detection times for oxycodone?

Oxycodone can be detected in urine by our oxycodone test for as long as 2 to 4 days after it enters the urine.

Q: What are the street names for oxycodone?

Kicker, OC, Oxy, OX, Blue, Oxycotton, Hillybilly Heroin.

Q: Does this test also detect suboxone (buprenorphine)?

No, this test does not cross-react with suboxone. The only test we carry that tests for suboxone is our Suboxone / Buprenorphine drug test. If someone is taking suboxone they will NOT test positive for oxycodone if you administer this test.

Q: Can I just use an opiates test instead?

The opiates test is designed for drugs like codeine and morphine. Morphine and codeine are opiates. The compounds are found in the opium poppy. Oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone are semi-synthetic opioids, meaning that they are made up from opiates but are not found in nature. While oxycodone for example can cause a positive on an opiates urine drug test, it won’t always. That is why we sell this product, which specifically targets semi-synthetic opioids at a 98% accuracy level and a much lower, more appropriate detection level (300 ng/mL v. 2000 ng/mL on the opiates test).

Q: What are the short term effects of oxycodone?

Pain relief, sedation, euphoria, feelings of relaxation, respiratory depression, constipation, papillary constriction, and cough suppression. A 10 mg dose of orally-administered oxycodone is equivalent to a 10 mg dose of subcutaneously administered morphine as an analgesic in a normal population. Oxycodone’s behavioral effects can last up to 5 hours. The drug is most often administered orally. The controlled-release product, OxyContin®, has a longer duration of action (8-12 hours).

Q: What are the long term effects of oxycodone?

As with most opiates, oxycodone abuse may lead to dependence and tolerance. Acute overdose of oxycodone can produce severe respiratory depression, skeletal muscle flaccidity, cold and clammy skin, reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, coma, respiratory arrest, and death.

Q: What is the difference between Oxycodone and OxyContin, and OxyContin and Tylox, for example?

OxyContin and Tylox are both prescription medications that contain varying amounts of oxycodone. Oxycodone is their active ingredient, which is why this test is an Oxycodone Test - its testing for the active ingredient common to all these medicines. However, OxyContin contains between 10 and 160 milligrams of oxycodone in a timed-release tablet. Painkillers such as Tylox contain 5 milligrams of oxycodone and often require repeated doses to bring about pain relief because they lack the timed-release formulation.

Q: How popular is oxycodone?

According to Monitoring the Future (MTF), rates of nonmedical use of prescription painkillers are relatively high among teenagers and include a significant increase in the abuse of OxyContin among twelfth graders. The 2005 MTF shows annual use of OxyContin by 12th graders has risen from 4.0 percent in 2002 to 5.5 percent in 2005. Oxycodone has established itself as a popular new drug of abuse; and we have therefore this oxycodone drug test to help you be sure as to whether a loved one is abusing this drug.

Q: How Is OxyContin Used?

OxyContin, also referred to as “Oxy,” “O.C.,” and “killer” on the street, is legally prescribed as a timed-release tablet that provides up to 12 hours of relief from chronic pain. The benefit of the medication to chronic pain sufferers is that they generally need to take the pill only twice a day, whereas a dosage of another medication would require more frequent use to control the pain.

Q: How Is OxyContin Abused?

OxyContin abusers either crush the tablet and ingest or snort it or dilute it in water and inject it. Crushing or diluting the tablet disarms the timed-release action of the medication and causes a quick, powerful high. Abusers have compared this feeling to the euphoria they experience when taking heroin. In fact, in some areas, the use of heroin is overshadowed by the abuse of OxyContin. This is one of the reasons we provide an OxyContin Test - this is a very dangerous drug.

Q: How Does OxyContin Abuse Differ From Abuse of Other Pain Prescriptions?

Abuse of prescription pain medications is not new. Two primary factors, however, set OxyContin abuse apart from other prescription drug abuse. First, OxyContin is a powerful drug that contains a much larger amount of the active ingredient, oxycodone, than other prescription pain relievers. By crushing the tablet and either ingesting or snorting it, or by injecting diluted OxyContin, abusers feel the powerful effects of the opioid in a short time, rather than over a 12-hour span. Second, great profits are to be made in the illegal sale of OxyContin. A 40-milligram pill costs approximately $4 by prescription, yet it may sell for $20 to $40 on the street, depending on the area of the country in which the drug is sold.

OxyContin can be comparatively inexpensive if it is legitimately prescribed and if its cost is covered by insurance. However, the National Drug Intelligence Center reports that OxyContin abusers may use heroin if their insurance will no longer pay for their OxyContin prescription, because heroin is less expensive than OxyContin that is purchased illegally. These are all reasons why an oxycodone test is on the home drug test market.

Q: Why Are So Many Crimes Reportedly Associated With OxyContin Abuse?

Many reports of OxyContin abuse have occurred in rural areas that are often located in economically depressed areas, as well. Therefore, people for whom the drug may have been legitimately prescribed may be tempted to sell their prescriptions for profit. Substance abuse treatment providers say that the addiction is so strong that people will go to great lengths to get the drug, including robbing pharmacies and writing false prescriptions.

Q: How Can I Determine Whether a User Is Dependent on Rather Than Addicted to OxyContin?

When pain patients take a narcotic analgesic as directed, or to the point where their pain is adequately controlled, it is not abuse or addiction. Abuse occurs when patients take more than is needed for pain control, especially if they take it to get high. Patients who take their medication in a manner that grossly differs from a physician’s directions are probably abusing that drug.
