Detection Period: Within 2-5 hours of use and can still be detected up to 7-45 days (depending on amount and frequency of use)

Detection Level: 50 ng/mL (the cutoff level suggested by SAMHSA)

Brief Description of Drug: Marijuana is a common illegal drug prepared from the Cannabis plant genus and is the most widely used illicit drug in the world. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical compound in marijuana that makes it psychoactive and the ingredient that is tested for with this screen.

    Effects:

    • Enhanced sensory perception
    • Euphoria followed by relaxation/drowsiness

Forms: Greenish-gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and/or flowers; resin (hashish) or sticky, black liquid (hash oil)

Methods of Consumption: Smoked, eaten (mixed in food or brewed as tea)

A urine drug test can detect marijuana as soon as 2 to 5 hours after use. However, the detection period varies based on the amount used, frequency of use, and the user's weight and body fat. For a heavy weed smoker, THC could still be detected up to two months after the last use. For an infrequent user, marijuana could stay in your system for up to two weeks, and for someone who only smoked marijuana once, it may be out of your system in less than a week.

How the Test Works: A marijuana drug test allows you to learn the test subject's recent drug history through a very simple procedure. To perform the test, collect a urine specimen in a clean and dry container at any time of the day. Dip the drug test card into the urine specimen, and after 5 minutes, you can check if the result is positive or negative. The results are easy to read:

    • Negative Result: Two lines will appear—one in the Control Region and one in the Test Region.
    • Positive Result: No line will appear in the Test Region, but a line will appear in the Control Region, indicating that the test was conducted successfully.

Can Secondhand Marijuana Smoke Affect a THC Drug Test? Generally speaking, secondhand smoke does not affect the test. Even in an enclosed space, the test should not return a positive result.

    Some Facts about Marijuana:

    • Brief Description: Mind-altering drug due to the THC chemical.
    • Typically Prescribed For: Pain, anxiety, muscle spasms, nausea from chemo, nerve pain, poor appetite, weight loss from chronic illness, seizures, Crohn's disease.
    • Effects: Enhanced sensory perception and euphoria followed by relaxation/drowsiness.
    • Forms: Greenish-gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and/or flowers; resin (hashish) or sticky, black liquid (hash oil).
    • Methods of Consumption: Smoked, eaten (mixed in food or brewed as tea).

Recent studies have shown a rising trend in marijuana use. The 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 17.9% of Americans aged 12 or older had used marijuana in the past year, reflecting a significant increase over previous years.

Recent Law Changes and Usage Statistics: The legalization of marijuana in various states has impacted usage statistics. According to a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), states with legalized recreational marijuana have seen higher rates of use among adults and teenagers. These changes suggest a lower perceived risk and greater social acceptance of marijuana use.

    DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Allow the test card and/or test strip, urine specimen, and/or controls to reach room temperature (15-30 degrees Celsios) prior to testing.

    DIRECTIONS FOR SINGLE TEST CARD

    1. Bring the pouch to room temperature before opening it. Remove the test card from the sealed pouch and use it as soon as possible.
    2. Remove the cap.
    3. With the arrow pointing toward the urine specimen, immerse the test card vertically in the urine specimen for at least 10 to 15 seconds. Immerse the strip to at least the level of the wavy lines, but not above the arrow on the test card. Replace the cap and place the test card on a non-absorbent flat surface.
    4. Start the timer and wait for the colored line(s) to appear.
    5. The result should be read at 5 minutes. Results may be stable up to 1 hour after test initiation.

    INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

NEGATIVE:* Two lines appear. One colored line should be in the control region (C), and another apparent colored line should be in the test region(T). This negative result indicates that the marijuana concentration is below the detectable level (50 ng/mL).

*NOTE: The shade of color in the test line region (T) will vary, but it should be considered negative whenever there is even a faint line.

POSITIVE: One colored line appears in the control region (C). No line appears in the test region (T). This positive result indicates that the marijuana concentration exceeds the detectable level (50 ng/mL).

INVALID: Control line fails to appear. Insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedural techniques are the most likely reasons for control line failure. Review the procedure and repeat the test using a new test card or test strip. If the problem persists, discontinue use of the lot immediately and contact your distributor.

    1. How long does marijuana stay in your urine?

Answer: Unlike most drugs, marijuana can be detected in your urine for vastly different amounts of time, depending on usage. If someone smokes infrequently, for example, only once every two months, the THC will probably clear out of their urine in about a week to ten days. If someone smokes a few times a week, it will take longer for the THC to clear out of the urine. The reason for this is that THC is stored in your fat. If the body is taking in a lot of THC, more than it is capable of easily clearing out, it will store the excess THC in your fat cells. You can think of it as you might think of weight gain; if you are taking in more calories than you can burn, the extra calories get stored as fat. The same thing happens with THC – if your body can’t process all the THC you are putting into it, it will just save it to be processed later. Someone smoking a few times a week, especially if the marijuana/weed is high in THC content, will be putting enough THC in their body that some of it will get stored as fat.

If you do smoke frequently, expect to test positive on a marijuana drug screen for anywhere from 3 weeks to almost 2 months. If you smoke everyday or several times a day, you can test positive for 2 months or more. Detection times also vary depending upon your weight, metabolism, and other personal factors. Those factors generally don’t affect the test detection time too much, though.

It is also important to note that a marijuana urine test cannot detect marijuana immediately after the drug is taken. We suggest waiting at least 2-5 hours after use to test.

    2. Will I test positive on my test if I only took one hit, tried it once, etc.?

Answer: It depends. One rule of thumb we have is if the person got high or felt the effects of marijuana, they will probably have enough THC in their body to test positive on a marijuana urine drug test. If someone has only tried it once, if they had enough to test positive the detection time will be short – about a week.

    3. Will this test pick up k2, Spice, or synthetic marijuana compounds?

Answer: No, synthetic marijuana cannot be detected by these tests. For more information on how to drug test for those types of compounds, please see our article, "Spice: What Is It, And Can It Be Tested?"

    4. How is marijuana taken?

Answer: Marijuana is usually smoked as a joint or cigarette or in a pipe. Marijuana can also be smoked in blunts or cigars that have the tobacco removed and refilled with marijuana. Marijuana can also be mixed in food or brewed as a tea.

    5. How does the test work?

Answer: When the marijuana drug test is properly used with the urine sample, the urine specimen migrates up the card by capillary action. If THC is not present at a great enough level in the urine sample, it will not be able to prevent its antibody on the marijuana drug test card from reacting with the drug-protein conjugate on the test card. When this reaction occurs a colored line appears in the Test Region and the result is Negative. When marijuana is detectable in the urine it prevents the antibody from reacting with the drug-protein conjugate. Therefore no colored line appears and the result of the marijuana drug test is Positive.

    6. What are the behaviors of someone under the influence of marijuana?

Answer: Typical behaviors are euphoria, slowed thinking and reaction time, confusion, impaired balance and coordination and difficulty in problem solving.

    7. If a person smokes marijuana and then is tested an hour later, would it have time to show up in the urine?

Answer: Most likely not. Generally it takes about 2-5 hours for a drug to show up on a urine drug test after consumption.

    8. Why should I buy a marijuana urine test?

Answer: A marijuana drug test that tests urine is a highly effective way to learn about recent drug use. Our marijuana urine test is very simple and can be done in the home, at any time of the day. A urine test is a common type of drug test and very inexpensive.

    9. Can secondhand marijuana smoke affect a THC drug test?

Answer: No, secondhand smoke does not affect the test. Even in an enclosed space, the test will not return a positive result. Studies have shown that passive exposure to marijuana smoke does not result in THC levels high enough to trigger a positive drug test.

    10. How effective are instant home drug tests for detecting marijuana?

Answer: Instant home drug tests for marijuana are a highly convenient and provide quick results, within five minutes. They are designed to be user-friendly, making them accessible for anyone to administer. When used correctly, these tests offer accurate detection of marijuana use, helping to identify recent drug use efficiently. While laboratory-based tests are more comprehensive, home tests are a reliable screening solution that is far more affordable. The combination of convenience, speed, and accuracy, and price makes instant home drug tests a valuable tool for families, small businesses, and schools looking to maintain a drug-free environment.
